Kaziah Hancock lives in Utah on a goat farm. She is an artist and her portraits have sold for thousands of dollars.
But now Kaziah has a calling and a mission. Since 2003, she has painted more than 200 portraits of fallen soldiers. There is no charge for these portraits. They are a memorial to the men and women who have given their lives in service to our country.
Kaziah talks to the portraits and tears pool in her eyes as she connects with the faces looking back at her in these amazingly life-like paintings.
"What a sweet guy," she says of one soldier. "I believe he really is a guy who would give you the shirt off his back."
As she packs up the finished portrait, she adds, "You get to go home to mama."
Kaziah has spent more than $16,000 of her own money to fund this labor of love, called "Project Compassion." She has now enlisted other artists from around the country to join her in this mission, as the number of dead soldiers continues to rise.
The gratitude of the families that receive these priceless and generous gifts is what keeps Kaziah going. It is an emotional work that she does, painting these soldiers. It is a sacred calling.
