I recently read the story of how a female humpback whale was rescued by some divers. The large whale was weighed down by hundreds of pounds of crab traps and fishing line. They were wound around her body and mouth, causing her to have difficulty staying afloat. These divers realized that the only way to save her would be to cut the lines from her body although this was a risky proposition as only one slap of her tail could kill them. They took the risk and worked for hours cutting her free from the lines. The man who removed the line from her mouth said that her eye was following him the whole time.
After the whale was free, she swam in what seemed to be joyous circles, as if in celebration. She then swam, one-by-one to the divers who had helped rescue her and nudged each of them as if to say, "thank you." One of the rescuers said that it was the most beautiful experience that he had ever had. All of the rescuers said that they were forever changed by this experience.
Connecting with another living creature in this way is a life changing experience. It affirms to us again the oneness of all life. And it shows that other living creatures have emotions. They feel and express gratitude. It comes from the heart and soul of all of us creatures who share this planet and this experience of life in a physical body.
