I received an email from a friend recently encouraging me about my book and telling me not to give up hope of having it published. It was just what I needed to hear.
Kahlil Gibran in his book, The Prophet, writes: "You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give."
Sometimes the greatest gift that we can receive is the time and attention of a friend who listens to our concerns. And if that friend then offers to pray for us, we are doubly blessed. It takes so little really for us to feel loved and cared for. The greatest need that many people have is to feel heard. Life is so busy these days and it can be difficult to find time to make a phone call and say, "How are you?" and then take the time to listen. But people crave that. In my time in church ministry I found that people were so grateful for those phone calls which told another person, "I care."
Gibran goes on to write, "It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked..."
Why wait until you are asked to give. Extend yourself now to someone in need. Make a phone call or visit someone who lives alone. Offer to make dinner or pick up groceries for them. In other words, reach out and give of yourself. You are the voice and hands of God.
